Home for the Holidays—Mental Health Tips to Get You Through the Pandemic Holiday Season

The holidays can be stressful and overwhelming any year. With a global pandemic forcing us all to reimagine how we connect during the holidays, this year is no exception. With rising COVID case numbers forcing so many to reimagine the ways they connect with their community this season, home for the holidays certainly means something new this year. Between finding ways to be with your family (even virtually), juggling work and personal expectations, and finding ways to honor and celebrate the holidays, it’s understandable to feel overwhelmed. You’re not alone and we’re here to help with some mental health tips to get through the holiday season.

We’ve compiled a list of tips to help you navigate this unique holiday season while prioritizing your mental health:

Tip #1: Set boundaries with family if you need to.

Just because someone is family, doesn’t mean it’s okay for them to make you feel uncomfortable. You deserve empathy this holiday season.

Tip #2: Prioritize your health and wellbeing during finals.

Whether you’re at home or at or in person at school, finals may look a lot different this year. You deserve empathy during finals week.

Tip #3: You can keep your love life private if you want to.

It’s okay if you’re not ready to date again, get married to your partner, or come out to your family. You can keep your love life private if it makes you feel more comfortable.

Tip #4: Make sure to have some time alone to yourself.

Being around family more frequently than normal because of lockdowns can be mentally draining. Make sure to set some time aside to do things by yourself.

Tip #5: Keep in touch with people who make you feel loved.

Not being able to physically see your closest friends can be tough. Schedule time to video chat and virtually hang with friends on a weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly basis.

Tip #6: Don’t force yourself to make a resolution.

Just because a new year is starting, doesn’t mean you’re obligated to make a resolution. You can create new goals no matter what time of year it is, set them whenever you’re comfortable.
