Crisis Text Line is a leading mental nonprofit that provides 24/7 free text support to people in crisis. We understand that it takes a community of partners and individuals to build a sustainable and high-quality mental health support system available to anyone who needs it. That’s why Crisis Text Line prioritizes compassionate, non-judgmental, and empathetic mental health support that is free and easy to access for everyone.
Everyone should have access to compassionate and comprehensive mental health care. It takes considerable personal resources to seek out care from a doctor, therapist, or licensed counselor. Not to mention the cultural and societal stigmas attached to mental health concerns that hold back people from all backgrounds. While Crisis Text Line is not a replacement for therapy and ongoing treatment, we pride ourselves on being a safe, accessible, and supportive option for people in crisis – people who need help right now.
In order to provide a consistently thoughtful and helpful service to people at risk, we never cut corners in developing our technology, hiring compassionate staff, training our volunteers, and maintaining an advanced, well-researched approach to mental health care. We have a 100%, four-star rating on Charity Navigator, a non-profit rating system that reviews our records on Accountability & Finance, Culture & Community, and Leadership & Adaptability. This is an important criteria to consider when making your choice about the best mental health organizations to donate to. Learn more about our 100% rating here.
Our committed approach to mental health care is not cheap, and the free service we offer to texters is by no means free on the other side. Want to know where your mental health donation goes at Crisis Text Line?

We use your donation to…
Support people experiencing a mental health crisis – Texters use our service free of charge because of supporters like you. It costs us $28 to support one texter’s conversation on our Platform.
Help social work students complete their program requirements – We partner with universities to help social work students complete their practicum program requirements to graduate by supporting texters on our Platform. This program creates pathways for more mental health professionals and supports texters in their moments of need.
Train volunteers in mental health best practices – Volunteers must complete a 15-hour training to become a volunteer Crisis Counselor. Our Volunteer Experience team guides them through the training where they learn key skills like active listening and de-escalation techniques which impacts them beyond their time on our Platform and makes the world a more empathetic place.
Raise awareness for mental health resources – We partner with schools and universities across the U.S. to share our service as a resource for young adults in need of support.
