Bianca – Breaking the Cycle of Generational Trauma

The experience of generational trauma paired with stigma around mental health can significantly impact one’s ability to pursue and maintain a healthy sense of self and well-being. This was the case for Crisis Text Line texter, Bianca, who from an early age struggled with her mental health due to these factors, in addition to other traumas she endured. Below is the inspirational story of how she fought and overcame the many obstacles that threatened her mental well-being.

Bianca’s story:

I have struggled with mental health for as long as I can remember. As a child, I experienced sexual abuse at the hands of my paternal grandfather and uncle. At the age of seven, I confided in my older sister, who immediately stood up for me, and the abuse stopped. However, no one ever spoke to me about what had happened, and I was left to carry the weight of that trauma in silence.

Over the years, I battled anxiety, depression, shame, and guilt, compounded by the painful reality of being distanced from family members on my father’s side who either didn’t believe me or chose not to support me. Gratefully, every single person on my mother’s side of the family believed and supported me.

My heartbreak began early in life, from the absence of my mother throughout my childhood and well into adulthood, to the devastating loss of my father when I was 21. In my culture, mental health was not discussed, and as a result, I internalized a great deal of pain and isolation.

Everything began to shift when I started my undergraduate studies. I came to understand that my voice matters, that I matter, and that my feelings are valid. I began to explore mental health more deeply, engage in self-work, and move toward healing. I discovered that speaking out is powerful, and that sharing one’s story can be transformative. I remember using Crisis Text Line many times in my undergraduate years. Someone listening to me, guiding me, and supporting me, made a difference and allowed me to continue to move forward.

Today, my mission is clear: I want to provide the support that I never received. I want to be part of the change I wish I had experienced. I am committed to breaking the cycle of generational trauma and challenging the stigma surrounding mental health, especially in communities where these conversations have long been silenced.
