Honoring BIPOC Voices: Changemaker Brittany Ostler

Advocating for Mental Health through Speaking Up and Supporting Others

BIPOC mental health awareness month recognizes Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) communities and the mental health challenges they face. As part of our commitment to raising awareness of culturally-responsive mental health care, we proudly recognize BIPOC mental health advocates– including those within our volunteer community. Our volunteer Crisis Counselors are real changemakers—showing up with compassion, dedication, and empathy. They lead by example, offering support to those who need it most and advocating for mental health in their communities. This month we’re celebrating our 2025 BIPOC Changemaker: Brittany Ostler. Learn more about her journey below.

Q: What inspired you to volunteer? How has this focus shaped the way you engage with your community and drive change?

A: I was inspired to volunteer because I have been in a place of isolation and debilitating emotions. I have focused on helping end the stigma associated with mental health in my community by speaking up about my own mental health challenges and being a safe space for others and providing the support they need.

Q: Share a recent story of success that illustrates the impact of your work in mental health, showcasing the difference you’ve made in someone’s life.

A: I recently had a friend reach out to me late at night because she was having a bout of panic and didn’t want to be alone. I went over to her house and we watched one of her favorite movies. About half way through, she said she felt so much better and thanked me for allowing her to feel her emotions and not shaming or judging her for them. I created space for her to feel, and she was able to process through it.

Q: What advice would you give volunteers looking to make a difference in improving mental health access and awareness within their communities?

A: It starts with you. Just one person can make all the difference in others lives. Speak up about your own challenges, this allows others to not feel alone and in time can create a community of support. Be open and vulnerable and be part of ending the stigma around mental health. Everyone deserves to have grace and empathy when their world feels like it is falling apart. Change starts with you.
