Throughout the month of June we asked our Crisis Counselors for words of affirmation that they would want to pass on to our LGBTQ+ texters. Their responses are summarized in the following letter:
Dear LGBTQ+ texter,
Love abounds at Crisis Text Line. Love is an endless resource. There is enough for everyone and more. A judgment-free zone, empathetic ears, and open hearts invite you to reach out to us in your moment of crisis.
There’s no ‘right’ way to be LGBTQ+. It’s ok not to fit neatly in any box. No matter how you identify, you’re just as deserving of fair treatment as anyone else. Your sexuality is not a factor in receiving support in times of crisis. Whether you’re already out or in the process of coming out, you’re accepted here because who you are inspires us to be better, love harder, and empower more. You are a valuable and unique part of the LGBTQ+ community and we appreciate you.
The LGBTQ+ community’s inclusivity is beyond inspiring. Its focus on living life authentically and loving unconditionally resonates strongly with us. When you live your truth, you inspire anyone who has ever struggled with loving themselves. Thank you for showing strength in the face of adversity and paving the way for the next generation.
If times may seem dark now, know that it will pass. You are a creation of wonder who deserves to occupy space on this Earth. Allow yourself to be the person you truly are, and want to be. Do not let people talk you down; you are an amazing and awesome person. Surround yourself with love and positivity. Don’t be afraid to let your light shine.
We know that you’re strong, but when you need someone to lean on, please reach out for help! We love you for who you are. The world doesn’t know your heart or your story, so kindly disregard all criticism and hate. You have no space for that negativity anyway; only room for love. We’re here to affirm and support you always. We will always be here to support you and listen when you are in crisis.
You are not alone in your struggles. We’ve got you.
