Donor Spotlight: Celebrating Supporters of Crisis Text Line

Q&A with Sophie Dutheil – How she finds her own meaningful way to contribute

At Crisis Text Line, the generosity of our donors is what helps us continue to save and transform lives. Through their contributions, we are able to provide training and support for our volunteer Crisis Counselors who in turn support our texters in need. One such donor, Sophie Dutheil, has found several ways to support Crisis Text Line – from volunteering as a Crisis Counselor in the past to now providing monthly donations.

Q: What initially inspired you to support Crisis Text Line?
A: I used to volunteer as a Crisis Counselor a few years ago, but when I started taking classes for an extra degree while working full-time, I could no longer take time to volunteer. I decided instead to make a small donation each month. By doing so, I am still able to support the cause and contribute in a meaningful way.

Q: Can you share a personal story or moment that reinforced your commitment to supporting individuals in crisis?
A: I had a difficult childhood, and adolescence was pretty dark as well. I wish Crisis Text Line had been available back then. I did not think I would make it beyond my 20’s, and I am so glad I stayed alive. It is reassuring to know that nowadays, if we are in distress, we are only a few clicks or taps away from a compassionate human. Being seen, heard and understood can make a big difference in someone’s life, especially during a difficult time.

Q: Why is it important to you to support mental health initiatives, particularly crisis intervention?
A: I work in the mental health field, but more on the scientific side. We are all aware of the rise in mental health issues and deaths from suicide in the general population. I love the idea of providing free and confidential support to any individual who may feel isolated or lost when they text 741741. Also, since this service is designed for crisis intervention, it creates opportunities for opening up conversations. While texters may initially seek support for a general concern, they may ultimately disclose suicidal ideation.

Q: How do you see your contributions making a difference in the lives of those reaching out for help?
A: I am happy to help Crisis Text Line pursue its mission. I imagine some of the funds are invested in improving their volunteer training, expanding resources for texters and volunteers, and improving the platform itself. All of these efforts contribute to perfecting the service delivered. As a volunteer, most of the time I would leave the platform with a rewarding feeling, with the sense of having made a positive impact on one or two lives. I also remember being shaken at times after trying to help a texter, which is why the volunteers are provided with support and a warm community. I must say, the supervisors on the platform do an amazing job as it takes so many teams working in synergy to reach this level.

Q: What drives your philanthropic giving overall, and why do you prioritize Crisis Text Line in your charitable efforts?
A: When I was unable to continue volunteering for Crisis Text Line, I started giving a small amount of money every month. In many ways, Crisis Text Line can make a significant difference in the healing process of an individual, which then creates a ripple effect on multiple people around them. Any step counts, regardless of how linear or not the progress appears to be.

Q: How has giving back to a cause that is meaningful to you impacted you personally or professionally?
A: I am happy to support a cause whose impact can be measured on a broad scale. I also would like to resume volunteering. The training tremendously helped me in my personal and professional life. It developed my listening and communication skills. Last year, I also was able to support a friend who was suicidal. It is so important to dare to ask direct questions about this topic; the Crisis Text Line crisis training is very well designed.

Q: What would you say to others who are considering donating to Crisis Text Line?
A: Even giving a few dollars each month is a nice form of steady support. The organization benefits from predictable income, and this strengthens its planning and budget allocation.

Q: How do you take care of your own mental health?
A: I have found that meditating daily increases my mental clarity, and I can feel the difference when I start skipping sessions. In addition, a few months ago I decided to leave my phone in another room before going to bed, and I noticed my sleep has been better. Another easy to implement habit I recently started: two weeks ago, in the midst of a work whirlwind, I found myself to be a bit too hyper, so I decided to cut down on coffee. I am now a bit more peaceful and present, as I drink more tea instead. As everyone else, I try to walk a fine line to do my best. But I also have some bad days. If this happens, I have a “bad day” list with activities that can help me feel better. Overall, I try to be gentle with myself, as I would be if I were supporting a good friend or a texter!
