Carrie – The Power of Support
Crisis Text Line has had over 10 million conversations in the United States since we began providing free, 24/7, high-quality text-based mental health support and crisis intervention. In helping so many individuals face challenges including anxiety, depression, grief, bullying, and more, one thing remains clear– having the support of someone to listen and empathize makes all the difference in overcoming moments of crisis, and often it can be what saves a life. A powerful example of this was recently shared by a member of our community, Carrie.
At the age of 13, Carrie struggled with the stress and the pressures of juggling things as a teenager– getting straight A’s, joining clubs, playing sports, and attempting to please her parents. At one point, it all became too much for her. Instead of letting it consume her, she reached out to one of her best friends who immediately dropped everything to ride his bike over to her house to talk. She also had another friend meet her at a park where they talked things out for hours. In Carrie’s words:
“That day saved my life. My friends, my support system, saved my life. But looking back, what if they were not there? What if I had no one to call, to notice, to care? This is exactly why Crisis Text Line exists.”
As her story helps to illustrate, support is a powerful catalyst in turning a moment of crisis from hot to a cool calm. Being able to lean on others– friends, family, or other members of your community– is so important for successfully navigating and maintaining one’s mental health.
