A Mental Health Reminder: You Are Not Alone

If I’ve learned anything in my life it’s that even in the moments we feel most alone, the reality is that we seldom actually are. I know this because I have lived with anxiety and depression my whole life. Anxiety and depression have shown up in my life in ways that—despite being surrounded by loving family and friends—often left me feeling totally alone. And, it wasn’t until I started talking about it and sharing my experiences, that I realized so many people are right there with me. That realization led me on a path to pursue a career in mental health. Now, I work as a Coach for Crisis Text Line, where I guide Crisis Counselors as they learn to help texters in crisis feel less alone in the world.

My journey with Crisis Text Line started on the front lines as a Crisis Counselor. I became a Crisis Counselor to help people in a moment when they felt like they couldn’t turn to anyone else. And, working as a Coach lets me spread more empathy in the world—arming our Crisis Counselors with the tools to help a texter move from a hot moment to a cool calm. My favorite part is that I get to be an ally and confidant for individuals in their time of pain. To me, supporting texters and Crisis Counselors is an incredibly humbling experience. It reminds me that speaking up about your feelings and reaching out for help is one of the bravest things anyone can do. In my time with Crisis Text Line, I’ve had the privilege of talking with over 500 texters and I’m continually in awe at their stories and resiliency to persevere.

As a Coach, I’m here to teach, inspire, and support Crisis Counselors as they learn to help texters in crisis. I’m able to use my personal experiences as a Crisis Counselor to train others to achieve success. Just like texters inspire me, I’m equally inspired by our Crisis Counselors. I have learned how to be patient, how to apply my active listening skills, and how to build unbreakable bonds.

I often think of Crisis Counseling in the context of this quote: “In every day, there are 1,440 minutes. That means we have 1,440 daily opportunities to make a positive impact.” The positive impact I see at Crisis Text Line fills my heart with so much love. I started this journey so I could give back, but what I have gotten back in return is life-changing.
