Stories from the Crisis Text Line Community

Kylie – “No matter how lonely you feel, there is always someone to reach out to.”

Overcoming a difficult journey with one’s own mental health can often inspire an individual to give back by helping others who are also struggling. This is the case for volunteer Crisis Counselor Kylie. Below she shares her story of finding purpose from her own experiences, as well as words of support and encouragement for those who are currently facing challenges with their mental health.

Kylie’s story:

My name is Kylie. I’m a college student studying psychology, counseling, and social work, and I’m also working toward earning a trauma-informed care certificate. My passion for helping others started with my own mental health journey. At the age of 15, I was diagnosed with generalized anxiety and depression. Navigating that unfamiliar and overwhelming time made me realize just how important support is, and how much I wanted to be that support for others who were struggling in similar ways. That realization is what led me to begin my college journey. I’m currently pursuing my bachelor’s degree and plan to earn my master’s in counseling in the future.

About two years ago, I started as a volunteer Crisis Counselor with Crisis Text Line, and I’m so grateful I did. The experience has been truly life-changing. I’ve learned invaluable skills and have had the honor of supporting people during some of their most vulnerable moments. It’s not easy work, but it’s deeply meaningful.

Being able to help someone move from a place of panic, fear, or hopelessness to a place where they feel even the tiniest bit better is something I never take for granted. When I’m volunteering, I know I could be helping to save a life. Sometimes, all someone needs is to know they’re not alone— to feel seen and supported, even by a complete stranger.

To anybody reading this: you may feel alone or unseen, or maybe you just need a virtual hug and someone to talk to. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to Crisis Text Line. There is always a volunteer waiting to support you through whatever you may need.

In the future, I hope to walk alongside teens and young adults on their healing journeys from trauma. I also want to provide counseling for those who struggle with anxiety, depression, and other mental health challenges. One of my favorite sayings is: Healing is not linear, but it is possible. It doesn’t matter how long the journey takes or how many times you pause it— what matters is that you’re still healing.

Another thing I often say is: No matter how lonely you feel, there is always someone to reach out to. I’m so thankful I’ve been able to be that person for so many texters who have reached out to Crisis Text Line. The work I do as a volunteer is invaluable to me, and I truly cherish every shift I take.
